Cirque TIcketsCirque du Soleil (French for “Circus of the Sun”) is a live entertainment circus group that is based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Founded by two street performers Guy Laliberte and Daniel Gauthier, the show went through many hardships. In 1980 the show was initially known as Les Echassiers.

They toured Quebec as a performance troupe until they faced money troubles that was eventually relieved by a government grant in 1983 when they were a part of 450th anniversary celebrations of the discovery of Canada. They were renamed the Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil and were a success in 1984, which brought them a second year of funding.

Laliberte hired another performer known as Guy Caron from the National Circus School to help it become more of a proper circus. They decided not to have a ring and animals to help create the modern idea behind a circus (known as Cirque Noeveau, or New Circus). The show is a storyline that goes through many smooth transitions. The performers are never hidden behind a curtain and the props are changed by the performers themselves.

In the late 1980’s, Nouvelle Experience was introduced by Franco Dragone and made Cirque a huge success and largely popular.

In the 1990’s through 2000, Cirque grew larger from one show consisting of 73 employees to 3,500 from 40 different countries doing 15 different shows. The shows produce a revenue of about $600 million US dollars. Because many shows are available in Las Vegas they play to more than 9,000 people per night.

Several other shows (both family friendly and adult in nature) are currently developing around the world along with nightclubs and a women’s clothing line.

In looking to the future, the Cirque shows are planning on appearing more frequently on the television and are also looking to take residency in many other hotels along the Las Vegas Strip.
